Art from the Ottoman Empire

When the kingdom of the Rum-Seljuks collapsed, this was exploited by a local Turkic ruling family in northwestern Anatolia, whose progenitor was named Osman. Justified injihad (“holy war”), the Ottomans extended their possessions into Byzantine territory in Anatolia and soon occupied large parts of the Balkans as well. Only the Byzantine capital Constantinople stood until Mehmed the Conqueror captured the city in 1453 and ended the Byzantine Empire. Under the name Istanbul, the city became the capital of the Ottoman Empire.
